Do you like to keep up with the latest news?

你喜欢跟上最新的新闻吗?

Well, it depends on what kind of news we are talking about. I prefer to read about social events and news in the show business, like who's going out with my idol, or who's having an affair, that kind of thing. I know it's none of my business, but me and my friends just gossip about them, I mean, it's a good way to entertain ourselves.

Why do you want to know the latest news?

你为什么想知道最新消息?

Um...first of all, I'm curious about what's going on in this world, especially things happening around me. And also, talking about current events is like a daily activity I would do when I'm hanging out with my friends. I certainly don't want to look like an idiot who knows noting about the current affairs.

How do you usually get your news?

你通常是怎么获取新闻的?

In most cases, I get news from the Internet on my phone, 'cause there are many applications that can give me up-to-the-minute news. It's super convenient. And sometimes I can know what happened when I'm chatting with my friends.

Do you prefer to read newspapers or watch TV to get your news? / Do you read news from newspaper or internet?

你喜欢看报纸还是看电视来获取新闻? / 你看报纸上还是网上的新闻？

1. Um,to be honest, neither of them. I mean, I hardly ever read newspapers except when I'm on a plane where I'm not allowed to use my phone, and for the past four years, I've been living in the school dorm where we don't have a TV. So, like I said, I just read news on my phone.

2. Well, I generally read news online because it is really easy to view the news just with a few clicks of a mouse and it doesn’t cost me anything.

3. Normally I read news from TV news programs, which are very convenient and updated; but if I’m too busy to watch TV, I’ll read news from the Internet in my mobile phone.

4. Well, if I have free time at home, I’d like to watch the news and editorials on with my family; whereas you know, it takes time for the newspaper to publish so the news are always not so updated.

Which do you think is more important, domestic news or international news?

你认为国内新闻和国际新闻哪个更重要?

1. Um...if you ask me, they are equally important. I mean, domestic news is closely related to our daily life, and some policies our government made can affect our decisions, like the second child policy, or the number of houses you can buy. And for future international students like me, it's important to read about international news, it can provide information about which country is most welcoming and the safest, you know, things like that.

2. I believe that domestic news is more important than international ones because it’s closer to home, and affects me more.

Would you say the news affects your life very much?

你会说新闻对你的生活影响很大吗?

1. Well, generally it has little influence, but sometimes, if the news is closely related to my life, it might have some effect, for example, last year, there's news about second child policy, after that, my parents have been thinking about giving me a little brother or sister.

2. News very much affects my life. If the news is bad, for example, which much of it is at present, considering the economic downturn, etc., then I start to feel depressed about losing my job and how I’m going to pay the bills.

Who is more interested in the news, older people or younger people?

谁对新闻更感兴趣，老年人还是年轻人?

Well, it depends on the kind of news. Older people are more into news about politics and military, and they are more concerned about social event. However, younger generation, we are more interested in the news about celebrities.

Are old people and young people interested in the same news? (Why?/Why not?)

老年人和年轻人对同一新闻感兴趣吗?(为什么?/为什么不呢?)

No, I guess old people are interested in different kinds of news from young people, such as political news, etc, because they have a greater interest in protecting their benefit programs, from medical care to social security; whereas young person might be interested in the latest teen fashion, sports events.

Would you like to be a news reporter?

你想当新闻记者吗?

Um...not really. It's not my dream job. Plus, you need to have a strong social responsibility, 'cause being a reporter is not just about telling people the interesting stuff that's happening, sometimes you need to have the courage and sense of justice to reveal the dark side of the society, which is pretty dangerous and risky, 'cause those bad guys tend to get back at you after you expose them to the public.

Do you read news?

你看新闻吗?

Of course I do. I often buy a daily newspaper on my way to work and then read it while have morning coffee to find out what is new.
